Prototype 1 car

Kevin,

Is the prototype 1 car featured in Hot Rod lowered? If so how much and what company/parts were used. I just recently received my 18x9 wheels and would like to get that same stance. My car is also a 79 like the Prototype 1 car. Great job on these cars they look perfect.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

How do the wheels fit?  What backspace and tires are you running?  Any clearance issues?  I want to get these for my 80TA.  Thanks in advance, Ron

Ron,

The wheels fit great. I used a 5.25 backspace which was recommended by Year One and Nitto 555 275/40 tires. This is the same wheel and tire combo used on prototype car in Hot Rod except I believe they ran Goodyears. I am definitely going to lower my car because it has to much wheelwell space. I believe they lowered the Hot Rod car 2". I still never received confirmation as to how they exactly did it from Keith. Plan on waiting a good 10 weeks or better to get rims (although well worth it), I received mine just in time to put it away for winter.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the response.  I actually got two different answers from YO, one was 5.25 on all four, the other was 4.24 in front and 5.25 in back.  So yours is 5.25 on all four?  No clearance issues on the stock a-arms?  YO also recommended the BFG Gforce KDW 275/40s.  On the lowering, I know many people who have used the Hotchkis TVS, which will bring your car down @2 in front and 1.5 out back.  You can get the springs separately from most vendors including YO: http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/headline.asp?hid=426BO60320

BTW, I like to see any picts youv'e got of your ride w/the billet rims!

Take care - Ron

Ron,

I have 5.25 backspace all the way around and have no issues. I was unable to attach picture, so if you have e-mail address post it and I will send you what I have. Does the Hotchkis kit really lower it a true 2 in the front and1.5 in the back and were they happy with the TVS?

Thanks,

Chris

As far as I can tell the TVS does lower that much after they settle in.  You might try emailing ta@yearone.com and techsupport@yearone.com at the same time to ask how they acheived this on proto1.  I've had pretty good luck getting responses from them.

My e-mail is fierytransam@gmail.com, thanks and good luck - Ron

Chris,

The Prototype 1 car has a Hotchkis TVS kit and the wheels are the same all around.

On the Hotchkis front springs, you can get them for a small block or a big block(chebby stuff). The only difference is that the BB springs are 1/4" longer than the SB springs, same springrate, windings, etc.

Hope this helps and thanks for your interest,

Brad

Brad,

Were there any other mods done to lower the car such as possibly cutting the springs down or adding lowering blocks to the leaf springs? Also what springs would you recommend using with 403 Olds with aluminum heads? I have heard conflicting answers.

Its getting time to think about ordering what I need for Summer and just want to make sure I have everything covered.

Ant other input you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

In the front of the car we used the hotchkis springs and cut out 1.5 rounds to acheive the stance that it now has. We cut out .5 rounds at a time drove it a little to let the springs settle, and then judged from there. I would also advise that you do it little by little to be on the safe side.

In the rear we used the hotchkis leaf packs and a 2" lowering block. We did not use the factory rubber isloators with the factory 10 bolt rear axle.

Happy Motoring!

Brad,

Thanks for the response, I have another question regarding the lowering of the car. I am truly a novice when it comes to the suspension so I apologize if the question(s) are stupid.

In the rear, are you saying that the car was lowered a total of 2.5" inches being that the Hotchkis leafs lower it 1.5" and then  2" lowering blocks was used?

Thanks,

Chris
