| Friday, October 8, 1999: We wake up before the crack of dawn at 5:00 a.m., preparing to leave Detroit for the kickoff of the Power Tour in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Trying to pack 10-days worth of luggage for two people, three cameras, film, briefcases, laptops and everything else into a Trans Am convertible proves difficult, but we carefully arrange everything and try to be as space-efficient as possible. |
 |
When that doesnt work, we fold down the rear seat and push, cram, curse, shove, and finally, the car relents and swallows all the cargo. By the way, October Detroit mornings are chilly!
The 800-mile trip to Fitchburg is fairly uneventful, although a massive traffic jam getting on the Massachusetts Turnpike slows us to a crawl for about an hour. We arrive at our hotel in
Winchester, Mass., at 9:30 p.m. Road-weary from the 15+-hour trip, seeing all the hot-rods in the hotel parking lot improve our spirits a great deal.
