| Dear Year One, I have
what I believe to be a 1967 Impala SS427 convertible. I want to restore the car back to
original, and I was wondering if you could tell me what I have or if you could refer me to
someone who could. It has SS427 emblems on the grill and trunk and a 427 emblem on the
front fenders. It does not have a domed hood, could that be original? It has Caprice tail
lights, so is it possible this car was ordered like that? There is an automatic
transmission in the car now, but strangely enough there is also a clutch pedal and
linkage. Which is original? The car currently has a black top, but the well liner is blue.
Was the top originally blue? Is there any way I can track down the original owner? I have
written down the numbers I found on the firewall tag. Im not sure what all the
numbers mean and would appreciate any help.
| Thanks, Frank Ozug

| Dear Frank, My
information shows that more documentation is required to prove you have an SS427 (build
sheet, protect-o-plate, dealer invoice, etc). An SS427 should also have the special hood
and Impala tail lamps. If documentation was not provided at the time of sale, or is not
found in the car, your only hope is to contact prior owners. They may be able to provide
paperwork or at least vouch for what the car was. As far as looking for past owners, the
DMV or local tag/title office is the best place to start your search.
Your tag decodes as follows:
01A - Assembly time January, 1st week
ST 67 16867 - 1967 Impala SS conv.
JAN - Assembled in Janesville, WI
553 - Body number (not significant)
TR 844 B - Blue vinyl bucket seats
D 4 - Nantucket blue paint, Blue conv top
2 - Second option group
Z- Automatic transmission
S - Rear antenna
R - Rear speaker4 - Fourth option group D- Unknown
I hope this information will help you in your restoration.
Marty
