Chevrolet gave the Chevelle a complete new set of clothes for 1968; a sleek shape that, particularly when dressed up in SS trim, was one of the most attractive on the road. Of course, beauty is certainly more than skin, er..., sheetmetal deep. Willard Havens’ Maryland-based 1968 SS 396 is a prime example -- under the lovingly restored exterior is a 375-horse 396 with the rare L-89 aluminum head option. The big block is backed by an M-22 “Rockcrusher” 4-speed and a 3.73 Posi 12-bolt rear axle. Evidently we’re not the only fans of Willard’s Chevelle; he’s entered the car in 31 shows and taken home 31 trophies. That’s a pretty good winning percentage...
New Jersey’s Chris Meyer tells us it’s taken him (and friends) 4 years to get his 1969 Road Runner in the shape you see it here. He’s restored the Ivy Green bird back to virtually original condition, with the sole exception being the 440 crate engine in place of the original 383 (which is sitting on a stand in his garage). Completing the mechanical package is an A-833 4-speed connected to a 3.23-geared 8-3/4” Sure-Grip rear axle. Except for the paint, which was shot at his father-in-law’s body shop, the entire restoration was done in his garage at home. After 4 years of hard work, Chris, his wife and children are finally able to hit all the cruise nights in style.
