The engines that powered
the muscle car era

By: Keith Maney

Muscle cars are great fun for many reasons. They look cool, they’re exclusive, collectible, visceral machines that make you glad you own one and envious if you don’t.

And best of all, they’re fast.

Muscle cars are fast because they’re driven by some of the largest and most powerful engines ever dropped in a production vehicle and served up to the general public. And we think it’s time to review some the greatest muscle car motivators offered by GM and Chrysler.

Most are production engines, but we’ve thrown in a few “Specials” for the sake of completeness, and because we dig horsepower. This is by no means a complete listing of all the hot-rod engines produced during the muscle car era -- that would indeed fill a book -- this is more of a highlight reel.

So come with us now for more than a trip down memory lane... this is a cruise down Muscle Boulevard.
