The perfect time to clean up the jack and trunk accessories is while the spatter paint is drying.
With the wire brush, clean all the rust and loose paint from the jack and the spare tire.
Next, sand the painted sections of the jack and wheel with 180-, and then 220-grit sandpaper. After sanding, wipe everything down with solvent.
The jack and wheel had a few deep scratches and pitting, so we applied a coat of sandable primer and let it dry.
After drying, lightly sand the jack components (except the post) and wheel with 400-grit sandpaper.
The jack and the spare were painted gloss black, so we used general purpose gloss black paint (part # MS7805) to refinish both. This leaves a nice finish that will complement the rest of the freshly refinished trunk.
Again, while painting, many light coats are preferred over one heavy coat, as heavy coats tend to sag and run. |

Once the spatter paint is completely dry, were ready to apply the clear top coat. If you apply the clear coat before the base is dry, the moisture trapped under the clear will cause it to turn milky in appearance. Apply the top coat the same way as the spatter paint, then allow it to dry completely.

Once the trunk has been painted, its time for the new trunk mat. The Aqua and Black houndstooth mat (part # AT401) is correct for our car. Its pre-cut for the jack brace, the J-hook bracket, and around the inner fender. |
