The trunk area was then masked off with newspaper and masking tape. Be careful not to tape on the weatherstrip as it could tear when the tape is removed.

The wiring clips and grommets are removed, and the wiring is taped out of the way.

After looking closely at our factory coating, we chose the Dark Green and Aqua spatter paint (Year One part # 8013N). The trunk paint is not water resistant (it’s water based), so we will be using the protective clear top coat (part # 8000N) after the base coat has dried about 4 hours. Four cans of spatter paint and two cans of clear coat should do most trunks.

Be sure to shake the paint well, hold the can 10 to 14 inches away, and use multiple light coats instead of one heavy coat.

Try to match the factory spray patterns when painting your trunk. There are a few spots behind the quarter panel braces that will not get any paint at all. On the trunk hinges, use a piece of cardboard to match the factory’s break point between trunk paint and car color. After the last coat, you can pull the car out in the sun to help the paint dry.
