Straight off the showroom floor, fourth-generation F-bodies have a lot going for them. They're reasonably fast, handle well and are relatively comfortable machines. Of course, the best thing about these cars, in our humble opinion, is that they make fantastic platforms for building really fun hot rods.
And that's what we've been doing with our Project Z28. A while back, we treated the '95 Z to a healthy dose of horsepower in the form of a Vortech-blown 383. This engine package made a stellar 505 rear-wheel horsepower on the chassis dyno, and transformed what was a fun ride into an absolutely thrilling one. While we admit to being a power-crazed lot around here, we realize that big power will certainly hurt an otherwise stock drivetrain. The 4L60-E tranny had been beefed up a bit, but the OE 7.5" 10-bolt didn't stand a chance of holding up to all the power and grunt made by the huffed small block. And, in the off-chance that the rear-axle assembly didn't simply disintegrate after the first hard launch with sticky tires, the rear suspension certainly wouldn't be able to harness the power effectively. Clearly, an upgrade in the suspension and rear axle department was in order. So, we talked to the folks at Moser Engineering about one of their bolt-in 12-bolt axle housings, complete with upgraded axles, 4.10 gear set and beefy posi unit. Then we contacted Dick Miller Racing and ordered up his chromemoly control torque arm and panhard rod. After seeing the quality of materials and engineering from both organizations, we were confident that our Project Z could now handle repeated hard launches on slicks, and come back for more. Armed with such good pieces, the thrashing began. All these products are available from Year One, so don't hesitate to give us a call with questions about the parts, or Project Z28.
