Remember the story of Walter Mitty from your school days? In the story by James Thurber, the lead character (Walter Mitty, of course) frees himself from the drudgery of day-to-day life with the help of his overactive imagination. Don't worry, we're not about to rehash all those high-school literature classes you most likely slept through, but we simply couldn't resist comparing the NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway with the Walter Mitty story. Why? Because the SMS brings out the Walter Mitty - or perhaps that should be the Richard Petty - in all of us.
The Silicon Motor Speedway is actually a high-tech stock car racing simulator in which you're buckled into place in a scale model NASCAR racer, complete with working instruments, gas, brake and clutch pedals, and a for-real Hurst shifter sticking up next to the racing seat. Through the miracle of modern technology, you get to "race" your particular car against a variety of human and computer-generated opponents on some of the most famous tracks in the world of racing. Truth be told, you don't really need a hyperactive imagination to have a blast at SMS. The cars, controls, video graphics and sounds convincingly put you in the thick of the on-track action. Combine the controls and audio-visuals with the g-forces so realistically reproduced by the "car" you're sitting in, and this is the most fun you can have without getting a competition license and finding a sponsor. A group of us from Year One spent an entire morning recently at the Silicon Motor Speedway in the Mall of Georgia, located just off I-85 in Buford, Georgia, and had a blast. Click on each of the images below to see what the Silicon Motor Speedway is all about. Then go find one close to you and cut a few hot laps. You'll love it! |
