Year One Customer Car Show

1968 Firebird

Joe’s car is a strange bird indeed. Just take a look at the list of options found on the window sticker, I bet the salesman was happy with his commission check after this sale.
As most people know, the Ram Air option was one in itself, but then add that to a
convertible and you really thin down the field. It is reported that only 12 Ram Air
convertibles were made in ‘68 (includes both I and II models), and as of June of ‘99 there are only 6 known to still exist.
What makes this car even more rare (if possible) is the factory saddle trim option which is
leather; we're talking about 1968 here folks. Joe says that his car is even stranger still since
after close inspection, he noticed that the factory put 2 shocks on the driver side (he said
that he had read an article about this back in ‘67 which stated that Pontiac was experimenting with the notion).
Want another point of interest? Well, Joe still has the factory non-RA scoop inserts that all
the cars came with. See the thing is, the dealer would install the RA option while prepping
the car for delivery; the RA setup was shipped in the trunk.
